MOTIVATE ME MONDAY - WHICH WORKOUT IS BETTER?

May 4, 2015

Looking to lose a few pounds but don't know where to start? Between books, magazines, and the online world of endless information it is pretty easy to find workout advice for any question you may have. Rather than lose yourself in information overload take a quick look at a few of the most common workout questions we had and see which is better for you. Our knew found knowledge helped us change up our workouts so we are now working smarter instead of harder!

SUNRISE OR SUNSET WORKOUTS?

This question may be answered for you based on whether or not you are a morning person, or what your schedule allows you do to. If the choice is yours however, many the experts have found one slightly better than the other. Planning your workout in the am leads to more consistent workouts as your daily plans can't get in the way of a later workout. Mornings at the gym also tend to be less crowded, and morning exercisers enjoy a jumpstart to their metabolism as well as a dip in blood pressure both during and after their workout. Dr. Oz also found that the AM workout crowd fell asleep quicker at night and were able to achieve a deeper more restorative sleep through the night.

Don't lose hope Sunset Sally's. PM exercisers tend to have more strength for their workout as they are not groggy from hitting the alarm 3 times and rolling their sad selves out of bed. Because they are fully awake and have fueled their bodies all day long they are also able enjoy a longer and harder workout if they so choose. After a full day of happenings evening workouts also tend to help with stress relief with in turns helps with your weight loss. Taking your frustrations out on a workout is more likely during the evening than those who enjoyed an am workout and are now fighting the urge to snack. It may also be easier to find a workout buddy in the evening hours, and research has shown friends sweat together lose (weight) together.

KETTLE BELLS OR DUMBBELLS FOR MUSCLES TONING?

Kettle bells have become a trendy fitness item as of late and are an effective workout tool. That being said, for building muscle Bill Campbell, Ph.D. explains it better than we do, "moves like a dumbbell curl or press are more effective at stimulating type II muscles fibers, which leads to an increase in muscle size. When you do kettle bell specific exercises like swings, you use momentum as well as force. While these calorie burning moves do use type II muscle fibers, they primarily activate type I fibers, whose main function is improving endurance-not growing muscle."

CARDIO BEFORE WEIGHTS OR AFTER?

Exercise physiologist Marta Montenegro, says for most women weights should be first. If you are wanting to slim down and shape up, hitting the weights first uses your anaerobic energy systems first so your body will be ready and able to burn fat by the time you hit the treadmill. That means more calories burned, not just in the gym, but after your cool down as well. By doing cardio first your muscles will be tired and your weigh routine less effective.

YOGA OR PILATES?

The great debate among Yoga and Pilates continues. Which is better? That depends on you, and your preference for one over the other. While Yoga is centuries old and allows for a variation of poses, Pilates is much newer to the fitness scene, was designed as a form or rehabilitation and strengthening, and was made popular by dancers.

In both Yoga and Pilates you can and will gain strength and flexibility but the difference comes in how that is achieved. Pilates enthusiasts will generally receive a total body workout but focus on aligning the spine and strengthening the core. Yoga goers will in turn workout every muscle in the body equally.  Each posture is accompanied by a counter posture to ensure balance is created in the body. If you are interested you can read about more of the differences here and pick your poison.

EAT BEFORE OR AFTER?

Both, says Dr. Nancy Cohen, who is head of the department of nutrition at the University of Massachusetts. She recommends eating a meal high in carbs and protein and low in fat 3 to 4 hours before exercise as carbs supply the body with the glycogen it needs for your workout. Skimp on carbs, and your muscles won't perform when you need them to. Don't just focus on food, make sure your body gets enough water both before, during, and after your workout.

HIT THE GYM OR THE GREAT OUTDOORS?

While making the trek to the gym has perks for some, such as the motivation of others around them, the use of a trainer, convenience, more equipment, and safety, many experts say that by taking your workouts to the great outdoors you are more likely to stick with a long term fitness program and receive more benefits to your mental health as well.

Just looking at a photo of the great outdoors will lower your blood pressure, stress, and mental fatigue so imagine what getting outside can do for you. A boost in self esteem is a side effect as well as the ability to fight depression. So get out there! Just a quick walk will give you a feel good boost for the rest of the day. As an added bonus being around the plants and trees will boost your immune system. Who knew?

MOTIVATE ME MONDAY - MAKEOVER YOUR DIET WITH A FEW EASY TRICKS

April 20, 2015

Trying to slim down for swimsuit season? Us too. We are trying to eat better and add exercise and more activity to our days to burn off those unwanted calories.  While we are starting to see some results we decided to take a closer look at what we were eating and be more mindful of our choices. So rather than a simple "eat healthy" we found some tips and tricks to help cut the bad foods and add the good. Hope you can find a few to add into your daily eating.
DITCH THE DRINKS
Some of them anyway. Pay attention to what you are drinking each day. Too many sodas, smoothies, lemonades, or juices may be the reason you aren't dropping any dress sizes. We won't mention any names but lets just say that while one of us has managed to keep herself away from the deliciousness of a cold crisp beverage in a can the other of us drinks it more than water. So, one of us will be swapping pop for water. (At least a few cans anyway.) Try to swap out some of your drinks with water or diluted juices to give yourself a more calorie friendly, and healthier for you beverage.  Soda is very dehydrating and as a rule of thumb, for every soda you drink you should drink double that amount in water to make up for how it will dehydrate your body.

WANTING WATER?
By the time you are thirsty for water your body is already dehydrated. The formula used to be 8, 8 oz glasses of water each day, a "one size fits all" rule. Experts agree that has changed, as water needs are different for every body, and every body type. Needed water intake also depends on size, weight, activity level, diet (how much food are you eating that contains water such as soup, fresh fruit, etc.)  and where you live.  A good rule to follow however, is to strive to drink half of your body weight in ounces each day.  For example a 150 pound woman would generally need 75oz of water a day. If you are more active and live in a hotter climate then you need more water vs someone who is less active and living in a cooler and/or a more humid climate.

WORK WITH A SWEET TOOTH
Chocolate craving? Instead of eating an entire chocolate bar or box of cookies try adding some chocolate chips to fresh fruit. Chocolate chips in raspberries are quite delicious and a low cal snacking option. Craving the crunch of chips? Try celery sticks, or a handful of chips with fresh salsa.  Find a way to have a small portion of what you are craving paired with something healthy.

CHANGE THE TEXTURE
While simple fresh food can taste delicious sometimes we get tired of the same old thing. But, we still need that nutritious food. Keep your favorite foods but change the taste to some extent by changing the texture.  Freeze your grapes. Try dried fruit. Mix up multiple fruits and veggies into a smoothie. Get creative. Anything that changes the texture just a little bit may help you reach for it instead of a more sugary alternative.

LOVE YOUR LEMONS
While traveling in Italy several years ago we learned this secret from the Italians. Lemon water is very, very, good for you. To name a few lemon water, boosts the immune system, fights blemishes on your skin, calms the nerves, helps digest food, reduces depression, quenches your thirst, rids the body of toxins, and as a nice added bonus, freshens the breath. So, try it first thing in the am in a bit of warm water or sip it during the day. But lemon water will have you seeing all kinds of benefits. Just don't go too overboard as too much lemon may not be good for the enamel on your teeth.
PLATE IT
Just a "handful or two" can turn into quite a bit more food than you intended to eat. So when you little hand goes a wandering into the chip bag for a few more, or just a taste, do yourself a favor and grab a plate. When you can see how much food you are eating on your plate it is easier to stop at one serving.

NO WONDERING OVER WHITE BREAD
Wonder no longer. While it may have fewer calories, white bread is not what you want to be eating. Opt for wheat as it is a complex carbohydrate which keeps you fuller longer. Whole grain bread provides more essential nutrients and is much healthier for you than white bread because it is less refined.

REMEMBER THE 3 S'S -SPINACH GOES IN SALAD AND SMOOTHIES

Spinach will not only strengthen your hair, skin, and bones but, it also has never ending health benefits such as lowering your risk of high blood pressure and many cancers. Bulk up your salads with leafy greens, and throw some in your smoothies to jam pack your drink with vitamins.

TRADE OUR YOUR SKIPPY PB FOR ALL NATURAL
Try some all Natural Adams peanut butter, it is less calories, has a higher content of protein, and is all around healthier for you. Once you have tried it you won't go back to the JIF/Skippy peanut butter. An even healthier alternative is Almond butter as it lacks the hydrogenated oils that make peanut butter a real health food no no.

Look over your diet and you'll be surprised to see that there are quite a few places you can make small changes that will make a big difference in how healthy you are eating. Rather than start a drastic diet plan we prefer to make small changes like these over the course of days, weeks, or months. That way we are continuously trying to eat better but can still enjoy some of our favorite foods as well.  How about you? Anything you'd add to the list to slowly makeover your diet? We love hearing new tips.

CRUSH YOUR CRAVINGS

March 30, 2015

Craving something? Could be your bodies way of telling you that you are missing something. No not chocolate. Nutrients, minerals, vitamins, protein, fresh fruits and veggies. The healthier you eat, the more you can cut your cravings because your body will be nourished by good wholesome food.

However, even when feeling good and eating our best, crazy cravings still strike and leave us feeling like the only thing to do is give in and eat. We wanted to share a few secrets we have found that really help when the sweet tooth strikes.

Take Ten
Ten minutes. Not ten treats. (Sorry, not sorry. You'll thank us later.) John Foreyt, PhD, of Baylor College of Medicine says that "cravings last about 10 minutes." We tend to think that to get rid of a craving you have to eat or it will just get worse. John says no. If you can stick it out for just 10 short minutes the craving will pass. So, time it. Do something for ten minutes that keeps you busy and you'll most likely be able to kick your craving to the curb.

Train Your Brain
"You crave what you eat," says Marcia Pelchat, PhD, of the Monell Center. In her study, participants drank bland drinks for 5 days and were then allowed to eat as they wished. They craved the drinks. Interesting. So, while the first few days may be hard, train your body to crave healthy foods made the way you like them. Berries with a bit of chocolate, apples and peanut butter, home made crunchy granola bars instead of chips. Flavored waters instead of sodas.

Nuttin To It
"Nuts with water will fix your craving and appetite, and change your body chemistry in 20 minutes," says Michael F. Roizen, MD. Not a nut lover? No problem. You only need 6 walnuts, 12 almonds, or 20 peanuts for this little trick to work. Pick your favorite nut and take them with a glass of water and you are set for success.

Plan On It
You crave the same thing, every day, at the same time? No surprise there explains Bob Mauer, PhD and author. "The brain loves routine." Use it to your advantage. Be prepared. If you crave a sweet pick me up every afternoon around 3pm, plan ahead. Make a healthy version of what you are craving and have it ready. Take a walk just as your craving sets in. With a plan in mind you are better able to combat the craving. Along with a daily plan, make a plan for the future that includes your fitness goals. A vacation, a new outfit you'd like to wear, celebrating a special occasion, anything that you can look forward to. When cravings strike, thinking about the progress you have made and visualizing yourself with your end goal in mind (looking and feeling great) help to keep you on track and avoid giving in to your cravings.

Out Goes The Oreos
The worse has happened. Your willpower crumbles and somehow  that box of Ding Dongs or Oreos (or both) found its way into your shopping cart and into your home. The experts say destroy them once you realize what you have done. Have a few and ruin whats left. Put them in water. Take them out to the garbage. Whatever it takes so that while in your current state of "oh, well" you don't end up eating the entire package.

A few other quick fixes according to those who know. Add coconut oil to smoothies and soups to control sugar cravings. Walk, stretch, and/or move every 30 minutes. Eat a small amount of what you crave paired with something healthy. Drink water, thirst may be your problem. Chew a minty gum or brush your teeth. To relieve stress which causes major cravings do yoga, take a power nap, relax for a few minutes, turn on upbeat music.
