Amid the excitement and action that is going on come Halloween night it becomes nearly impossible to get decent pictures of your kids in their costumes no matter how old they are. We love photos and were disappointed with the few rushed shots we got Halloween night so we began taking photos of the kids "costume ready" a few days before and have loved the results. Here are a few reasons you should consider doing the same.
COSTUME PREP
As event planners we used to plan and host a large scale family Halloween party several times every year. Our staff was late to EVERY. SINGLE. PARTY. Even our guests came trickling in late. Why? No matter how many times you have dressed up, getting into costumes takes time. By taking Halloween pictures beforehand you will see how much time you need to plan for the big night. By dressing everyone up for pictures you will have all the pieces of their costumes together and in one spot so Halloween night goes more smoothly for you.
LOCATION
Rather than grandmas poorly lit front porch you get to choose where your take your photos. A local park with the perfect yellow trees? The pumpkin patch that you visit every year? Or even your own backyard in the warm afternoon sun?
By taking photos early you get to choose the time that works best for you and your kids. You also avoid the rush and stress of Halloween night. Any time that works for you and give you time to take some photos both posed and of your children doing their thing in their costumes is what you are looking for.
REMEMBER
- Photos taken from the back or from above are just as important as pictures straight on from the front.
- To take pictures of the tiny details of their costumes and or their little hands and feet.
- Get low. They are small. Lay flat on your belly or squat to get down on their level for better pictures.
- Use props you already have. Pumpkins. Leaves. Trick or Treat buckets.
- Have fun! Toss leaves in the air. Set the timer and get in a few shots with them.
Our MUST TAKE Halloween Night Photos
- Getting ready
- On the porch before heading out.
- With friends, cousins, or siblings.
- One with you!
- Them walking down the sidewalk, buckets or sacks in hand on their way. Take this from their level.
- A few pictures of them on doorsteps ringing the bell and waiting.
- Checking out their loot when they get home.
Last but certainly not least. Remember to put down the camera Halloween night and have some fun making memories with your kiddos. They want to see some of you and not just all of your camera.
Happy Halloween photo taking!
