Tot Tip Tuesday - Easy Use What You Have Halloween Costumes

October 13, 2015

Halloween. More specifically Halloween costumes. Some years you have all your ducks in a row with the best idea for your childs' costume months in advance and are more excited then they are for it to make its big debut. Insert little Miss Strawberry below, whose costume was purchased before she was born with Momma crossing her fingers it would fit the next year.

Other years you hum and ho racking your brain for something great and all of a sudden you have waited too long and you need something like NOW.  Before you head to the store and spend a nice little chunk of change, check three places; your child's closet, your closet, and the toy box. Think outside the box a bit and if you don't find a complete costume we bet you'll find a pretty good start to one, leaving you to buy a few accessories rather than the entire kit and caboodle.

Here are a few easy costumes both for boys and girls we were able to put together using ONLY items in our closets and toy boxes to show that Halloween doesn't have to break the bank. Maybe it will jump start your creative juices and get you thinking about some DIY costumes you can pull off in the next few weeks for all the Halloween costume parades, parties, and the big night.

Little Lady Costumes

Princess Witch
A headband or piece of elastic attached to a cardboard tube crown can be added to any dress and/or skirt with the cutest of shoes and bam. Princess.

Black Kitty Cat
Any kind of black leggings with a black top, add some ears, tail, black shoes and finish it off with some whiskers. Ears and tail you can find at any Walmart, Target, etc. Get creative!!

Ballerina Princess
The beauty of having girls is you can add wings or a tutu to almost any ensemble and emerge with a costume . Change up the witch dress from above, and little miss is a ballerina in training. (Fairy wings can be found at your local dollar store for a buck.)

Little Red Riding Hood
A red cape paired with leggings, add a basket and small stuffed animal and you have Red Riding Hood and her "wolf". Slap some ears on Dad and you'll hear more "Ahhhs" than you did when she was a newborn.

Boys Costumes

Football Player
Take any old T-shirt and write on it with a marker to make a football mark on the front. On the back you can place a number of your choosing and their name (careful with stranger danger) or a name of their choosing so it looks like a football jersey. Add athletic pants or sweats, and use your eyeliner to make to black stripes under their eyes. They can carry a football if you have one.

Fireman
The perfect firefighter hat was a dollar store find. Add as much red as you can and seal the deal with boots and a toy fire truck.

Construction Worker/Mr Fix It
All these tools came as part of a set he received as a gift. Hard hat, tool belt, tools, safety glasses, and tool chest. Add an orange shirt, some jeans and hiking boots and Mr. Fix it is on the job.

Lumberjack
Thermal shirt, flannel jacket or shirt, beanie, jeans, and a saw from toy set above paired and  you have yourself the cutest little lumberjack around. Use some of moms eyeliner or halloween makeup to make him a beard (little dots will give the look of a rough beard without requiring too much artist know how from you) and you are set.

Cowboy
White shirt of any kind, vest of nearly any kind, paired with a well loved cowboy hat, jeans, a bandana, and yee haw you have yourself a little cowboy.

Happy Tuesday!
