HAIR CARE 101

May 6, 2015

1. Avoid using heat: Since this last year of using my blow dryer, straightener and curling iron less and I have been able to tell a noticeable difference in my hair. The heat causes breakage, split ends, and drys out your hair. Air dry as much as possible, if it is an absolute must, blow dry just the roots and let the rest air dry. Use a heat protectant when using hot tools on your hair, my favorite is TRESemme Heat Tamer. Braid your hair at night for natural curls that cause no damage to your hair!

2. Get fewer trims: how are you ever going to get long hair when you are trimming it every 6 weeks.  Trim what you need to with split ends or damaged areas and leave your hair to grow. You will thank us later for it, even though your hair dresser will not.

3. Wash less often: Everyone has their own opinion on this but I have found that my hair is healthier when I wash it 2-3 times a week instead of everyday. And whose hair doesn't ALWAYS look better on the second day with the added texture you get from having 2nd day hair. My favorite dry shampoo is Not Your Mother's Clean Freak, and if you are not big into dry shampoo go for baby powder, just remember to be subtle with the baby powder brunettes.

4. Invest in your problem areas: As a girl your hair is usually your crowning glory and you want to keep it that way so I say to invest in a handful of good products to keep your locks looking sleek. Living Proof Thickening Cream is one of my absolute favorites, it's on the pricey end but if it gives you anything near what Jennifer Aniston's hair looks like it is worth it.  Oscar Blandi Instant Glossing Cream recommended by Maria Menounous, volumizing shampoo is a favorite of mine (which tends to be drying) so I am always looking for a good gloss to help set the hair and this one is a winner.   Moroccanoil Treatment with the dry climate I live in my hair is always full of static and fly aways, apply the oil to the ends of my hair and it instantly replenishes and hydrates.

5. Choose claws over elastic ties: You would think that I would have gotten the hint sooner after finding several elastic hair ties full of ripped out hair laying around my house. For me claws hold better and don't pull hair out from using them like elastic ties do. The only time I wear an elastic tie is when I have a braid in.

6. Vary your shampoos: My hair gets use to shampoos pretty quick so I like to keep several different brands . . . probably too many. I always am drawn towards new shampoo/conditioners at the store and have to remind myself that I need to get through the small army of products I have in my shower.

7. Deep condition: You should be deep conditioning once a week, my current favorite is Victoria Secret So Sexy Moisture Mask, I wish that I could live in San Diego solely for the moisture that is in the air, it does wonders for your hair. Kerastase is a total hair and scalp renewal treatment that was sent from the hair gods. I bought this product for my wedding and am trying to get the most use out of it as I can as I slowly chip away at it.

8. Eat your fruits and veggies: Berries are packed with vitamin C which helps to feed your hair follicles creating healthy scalp circulation. Veggies carry a high percentage of water, without proper hydration your hair and skin begin to look dry. Veggies also carry vitamin A which contain antioxidants that will thicken, strengthen, and  prevent breakage to the hair.

9. Take your Vitamins: Before I got pregnant I was taking prenatal vitamins and I noticed that my hair thickened up and grew faster. Now that I am still nursing I am still taking these and my hair continues to grow down my back. Enough said.

#10. Vent brushes: Two good things about the vent brush, the vents in the brush allow for quicker dry hair when blow drying and less static as well as the bristles on the brush/comb are great for combing out the nasty tangled nests you get in your hair after wearing a scarf all day. (Am I the only one that get those?)
