Back in college with the ole Freshman 15 came a knocking, I decided something had to be done. I was working full time and in school full time so when summer rolled around I knew I had a small window to lose that weight. While I don't mind the gym or treadmills in the winter. I can't stand them during good weather. I have to be outside. So I took to the hills. Four times a week or more I would hike a rather steep trail that was 3 miles round trip. It was hard at first but slowly became easier and lucky for me the weight slipped right off. Years later, I have unsuccessfully been trying to lose the same ten plus pounds for roughly two years. It won't budge! Until the last few weeks. I remembered my hiking days and again took to the hills. Five days a week I walk/hike for 4-5 miles and I've lost five pounds already. Finally, success. As I've looked into it a bit more I found that it's not just me. Walking and/or hiking hills have more benefits than I thought. So if you are struggling to stay motivated with your current workout or just want to spice it up, give hiking/hill walking a try.
BENEFITS:
- Walking is convenient. No need to drive to the gym. Put on your shoes and go. Kids? No excuse. Put those cuties in a stroller for added resistance, or have them bike or walk with you.
- While walking is a workout itself, hill walking makes the muscles in your legs work harder, which allows you tone up your thighs and calves and lose weight.
- Hiking Hills provides the cardio benefits of running without the stress on your knees, hips, and ankles.
- Improved sleep.
- Should you choose to hike trails; the fresh air is invigorating, the scenery beautiful, and the time spent outside is very therapeutic.
- Dress in layers so you can avoid being too hot or too cold. If I'm hiking in the mountains I prefer jeans, while if I'm hill walking on pavement yoga pants/shorts and a tee shirt. Be comfortable.
- Comfortable shoes are a MUST. A good running shoe is suitable for hillwalking and many hikes or you may want to look into a hiking boot. Either way make sure you break them in first or your feet will let you know how very unhappy they are after you hike in a brand new pair of shoes.
- Hydrate. Always bring water with you. As summer temperatures rise, you will risk becoming dehydrated faster. Even on a cool day its is important to stay hydrated to keep your body moving.
- Hats and sunscreen are biggies for me. The older I get, the more I like to protect my skin, so I lather up and cover up even if I'll only be out for an hour.
- Be smart. Don't go on trails alone. No matter how familiar you are with the area and the trail always bring a buddy. If you must go alone let someone know where you will be and when to expect you back.
- No trails near your house? Kick the treadmills incline up to receive the same benefits, or find some hills in the neighborhoods near you. Even if there is only one hill you can go up and down several times.
- HAVE FUN! Once you start to see results and feel stronger and better from being out in the fresh air you'll become addicted. Promise!
